26.01.2014 : HYLASE-25 a new picosecond laser for micromachining from Fianium is available for customer trials

Southampton, United Kingdom (January 26, 2014) Fianium, the leading manufacturer of ultrafast fiber lasers has released HYLASE-25, a newly developed high-energy picosecond laser, for customer trials.

The HYLASE systems consist of two models, with sub-20 picosecond pulse duration and specified power (maximum pulse energy) of 8W (50 uJ) and 25W (125uJ). With built-in optical modulators, HYLASE offers flexible pulse repetition rate up to 40MHz and burst-mode operation for advanced process development. Both models have also second harmonic module as an option.

Fianium CEO Anatoly Grudinin explains,

“ Our first supercontinuum fiber laser had a modest power of 1W and was ordered by Professor Zheludev’s group at the University of Southampton in October, 2004

Since then we have increased output power by factor >10 and expanded the output spectrum to 370 nm at short wavelengths and over 2400 nm in the infrared. In my view the developments in supercontinuum fiber lasers is an excellent example of how low cost disruptive technology can migrate from early adopters to volume industrial customers. We are pleased to have reached this 1000th laser milestone. This also emphasizes the important role of close collaboration between leading Universities and laser companies.”

17.10.2013 : Fianium Awarded R&D Development Projects Totalling £1.35M ($2.1M)

The R&D projects with budgets amounting to approximately £1.35M will further develop the company's ultrafast and supercontinuum fiber lasers for high-volume industrial and medical applications.

The projects are funded as part of the UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB) SMART scheme, offering funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to engage in R&D projects which have potential to stimulate UK economic growth.

01.10.2010 : Fianium Opens New Office in Wuxi, China

Southampton, United Kingdom (October 1, 2010) Ultrafast Fiber Laser manufacturer Fianium is pleased to announce the opening of a representative office in Wuxi, China.

Manager of this office will be Dr Weijia Wang. Weijia graduated from Nanjing University of Science and Technology with a first class Bachelor degree in Optical Engineering, and completed his Ph.D in ultrafast laser micromachining at the Optoelectronics Research Center, University of Southampton. He also spent time as a postdoctoral researcher at University of Paris-Sud and a sales engineer in Photonics Technologies.

13.05.2010 : Fianium applications lab now fully functional for micro-material processing with picosecond fiber lasers

Southampton, United Kingdom (May 13, 2010) Ultrafast fiber laser manufacturer Fianium has announced that its micro-material processing applications facility is now fully functional and accepting enquiries and sample projects. Operating within Summit Photonics in Portland, Oregon, USA the facility enables OEMs to work closely with Fianium to test material samples and highlight the processing results attainable with its range of versatile picosecond fiber laser systems.

The applications lab is equipped with the latest Fianium HE 1064/532 microjule class fiber lasers (IR and green) with MHz to single shot and burst mode capability. These ultrashort, high peak power laser pulses enable ‘cold processing’ where material is ablated before thermal diffusion occurs in many materials, thus avoiding unwanted heating of thin films. The lab is also equipped with precision galvo beam steering and translation stages, which enable micron sized features to be scribed, drilled or cut.

The lab’s expert team is led by 25-year industry veteran Dr. Brian Baird, who has pioneered multiple generations of industry-leading solid state photonics solutions. His experience in metal, semiconductor, organic, glass and many other materials commonly used in applications such as microelectronics, semiconductors, photovoltaics, displays, medical devices etc, is an ongoing asset for customers using the facility.

07.05.2010 : Fianium succeeds in NKT Photonics lawsuit to establish right to manufacture photonic crystal fibres

Southampton, United Kingdom (May 7, 2010) Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer Fianium is pleased to announce that it has settled its UK patent dispute with NKT Photonics / Crystal Fibre A/S on favorable terms. The dispute concerned two patents relating to photonic crystal fibre ("PCF"). Significantly, by Order of the English Patents Court, Fianium's current PCF manufacturing processes do not infringe Crystal Fibre's patents. Fianium makes a nominal payment regarding a small number of lasers produced with alternative PCF manufacturing techniques and agrees to avoid future use of these alternatives. Both parties contribute to each others’ costs.

Fianium was confident regarding the upcoming trial. However, as noted by Fianium CEO, Anatoly Grudinin:

“ To a pragmatic businessman it was clear that a settlement now, which we consider was positive for Fianium on all significant matters, was the best choice - not least in that it allows us to concentrate fully on what we do best - developing advanced laser technology.

Fianium respects IP, and welcomes the rational resolution of disputes, but we cannot just be dictated to. That is why we litigated for over a year, with a much larger opponent, to establish that there is no monopoly regarding the manufacture of PCF for our products. ”

Fianium considers the real winners to be its customers, who will continue to access superior supercontinuum technology based on Fianium’s state-of-art PCF manufacturing techniques.

04.06.2009 : Fianium opens micro-materials processing applications lab. Collaboration with Summit Photonics set to prove ultrafast fibre lasers as a superior alternative to conventional DPSS lasers.

Southampton, United Kingdom (June 04, 2009) Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer Fianium announces the opening of its new micro-materials processing applications facility. Based in Portland, Oregon, USA the new facility enables Fianium to work closely with OEMs to test material samples and highlight the processing results attainable with its range of versatile picosecond fibre laser attributes. Through the facility Fianium will prove ultrafast fibre lasers as a unique and superior solution for laser processing of a diverse range of materials, including materials that have historically proven difficult to process using conventional DPSS lasers, such as polymers, glasses, organic tissue and reflective metals.

In setting up the facility, Fianium has partnered with photonics engineering services provider Summit Photonics, which is led by 25-year industry veteran Dr. Brian Baird. Dr. Baird has pioneered multiple generations of industry- leading solid state photonics solutions for laser processing of microelectronics, semiconductors, and photovoltaic devices during his career at Summit Photonics and Electro Scientific Industries (ESI). Southampton, United Kingdom (March 25, 2009) Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer, Fianium announces the appointment of Colin Seaton as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Colin's considerable experience and success in global business development and strategic marketing will help Fianium to continue to gain market share in the rapidly expanding laser technology market.
