24.01.2009 : Fianium Announces New Capabilities in Photonic Crystal Fiber Fabrication
Southampton, United Kingdom (January 24, 2009) Eradicating shortcomings and limitations of conventional supercontinuum lasers.
Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer, Fianium has unveiled a new type of photonic crystal fibre (PCF) - the early fruits of its strategic collaboration with the University of Bath. By working closely with the inventors of PCF and authors of numerous patents, Fianium has gained an immensely deep understanding of the technology and has been able to evolve its processes and Intellectual Property to make them even better and more cost effective. The new patent protected fibre design is exclusive to Fianium, and is integral to the company's ongoing new product development strategy as it strives to extend its market and technology leadership in supercontinuum fibre lasers.
By working closely with customers and the University of Bath Fianium has been able to explore and unearth many of the limitations and shortcomings of traditional supercontinuum fibre lasers. Inspired by this knowledge, the new PCF design was created to right these wrongs and enable development of better performance, more stable and more cost-effective supercontinuum laser solutions - the likes of which the industry has not seen before.
Curently Fianium has no plans to become a supplier of PCF and has developed its own fibre supply chain in order to protect continuity of supply.
Fianium CEO Anatoly Grudinin believes it will be an interesting year ahead:
“ Given the current economic climate I predict we'll see a number of mergers and consolidations during 2009 which could conceivably see suppliers starting to become competitors. In this highly competitive market I'm a firm believer in vertical integration, or at least having control of supplier relationships. We therefore felt it prudent to develop our own, reliable supply chain in order to guarantee the long term, high-quality continuity of supply of our new PCF.”

Southampton, United Kingdom (January 12, 2009) Patent pending fibre secures continuity of high-quality supply and helps Fianium to extend its market and technology leadership.
Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer, Fianium has developed a new supercontinuum fiber laser based on its proprietary high performance photonic crystal fibre (PCF) design. Supercontinuum fibre lasers utilising Fianium's superior PCF design will be rolled out during 2009 as the company seeks to extend its market and technology leadership in supercontinuum (SC) fibre lasers. Fianium's lasers can be previewed on its stand (booth 6225) at Photonics West 2009 and booth 8132 at BIOS 2009 in San Jose, USA between the 24th and 29th January 2009.
In 2008, in partnership with the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials at the University of Bath, Fianium developed a new type of PCF enabling superior performance SC fibre lasers. SC lasers based on Fianium's PCF design offer true white spectrum covering the entire 390-2400nm band. They also deliver greater power in the visible 400-700nm part of the spectrum, compared to lasers based on conventional PCF enabling wavelength tunability with enhanced spectral brightness. Fianium has now developed a new patent-pending technique for fabricating such fibres in volume.
The new supercontinuum fiber lasers have a number of advantages over conventional SC fiber lasers including their stability and no performance degradation over time. Because of its simplicity, Fianium's method of pulling fibre is also less expensive than conventional techniques.
Anatoly Grudinin, CEO at Fianium commented:
“Our high performance PCF design is evidence of Fianium's technical superiority, which has evolved through the team's 100 plus years of combined experience working with the world's best universities and professors at the forefront of ultrafast fibre lasers. Supercontinuum fibre lasers built using our high performance PCF design and fabrication method offer customers the advanced technology edge with which to push the boundaries of scientific discovery.
